Lesson 13 at a glance
Samarathlal Suranwala, head of the vegetable market, wins a government prize for growing a giant carrot, so the market holds a grand felicitation. One by one the speakers – Lasanwala, Batakawala, Dunglibhai, Kothimbirwala – praise him, each in the language of his own vegetable: ‘Like garlic, he adds flavour to every dish!’, ‘Like the potato, he mixes with everyone!’ The speeches get funnier and funnier – a gentle poke at our love for flowery speeches.

About the writer: મધુસૂદન પારેખ ‘પ્રિયદર્શી’
Madhusudan Parekh ‘Priyadarshi’ (1923–2014) was a well-known Gujarati humorist and critic, author of ‘હું, શાણી ને શકરાભાઈ’, and received the Ranjitram Suvarnachandrak in 2003.
હાસ્યરચના: સમરથલાલ સૂરણવાળાનો સન્માનસમારંભ – સરળ ભાષામાં
શાકમાર્કેટના પ્રમુખ સમરથલાલ સૂરણવાળાને ગાજરની સ્પર્ધામાં સરકારી ઇનામ મળ્યું. તેમણે એટલું મોટું ગાજર ઉગાડ્યું કે સૌ જોતા રહી ગયા! શાકમાર્કેટના વેપારીઓએ ભવ્ય સન્માનસમારંભ યોજ્યો.
પહેલા વક્તા લસણવાળાએ કહ્યું, “લસણ વિના શાક ફિક્કું લાગે, તેમ સમરથલાલ વિના આપણી માર્કેટ ફિક્કી!” બટાકાવાળા બોલ્યા, “બટાકાની જેમ તેઓ બધાં સાથે ભળી જાય છે!”
ડુંગળીવાળા ભાઈએ કહ્યું, “ગરીબ-તવંગર સૌને ડુંગળી જોઈએ, તેમ સૌને સમરથલાલ જોઈએ!” કોથમીરવાળાએ ઉમેર્યું, “કોથમીર જેમ શાકની શોભા, તેમ તેઓ માર્કેટની શોભા!”
દરેક વક્તા પોતાના શાકનાં ગુણગાન સાથે સમરથલાલનાં વખાણ કરે અને સભામાં હાસ્યનું મોજું ફરી વળે. અંતે સમરથલાલે નમ્રતાથી આભાર માન્યો – ‘આ ઇનામ આખી માર્કેટનું છે!’
