Lesson 13 at a glance
A touching story: near Gondal, a poor old father plants and waters trees along a dry road in memory of his dead son. Every day he carries water to them from a distant pond. The trees grow and give shade to travellers, animals and birds – a ‘green gaze’ of love turned into service.

About the writer: Makarand Dave
Makarand Dave (1922–2005), born in Gondal, was a mystic poet and writer – ‘તરણાં’, ‘ગોરજ’ – and received the Ranjitram Suvarnachandrak.
સંવેદનકથા: લીલી નજર – સરળ ભાષામાં
ગોંડલથી ઉગમણી દિશામાં ગામથી ત્રણેક માઈલ દૂર એક વાડી. વાડી પાસે એક વહેળો, ભૈરવની મૂર્તિ અને પડતર જમીન.
ત્યાં એક વૃદ્ધ રોજ વહેળામાંથી ઘડો ભરીને પાણી લાવી નાના છોડને પાતો. પૂછતાં ખબર પડી – મૃત્યુ પામેલા દીકરાની યાદમાં તે વૃક્ષો ઉછેરે છે.
વર્ષો પછી વૃક્ષો મોટાં થયાં – પશુ-પંખીઓને વિસામો, વટેમાર્ગુને છાંયો. વૃદ્ધની ‘લીલી નજર’ આખા વિસ્તારને લીલોછમ કરી ગઈ.
