When the demon Vritrasur tormented the world and no weapon could kill him, the gods learned that only a weapon made from the bones of the sage Dadhichi would work. Dadhichi gladly gave up his body for the good of the world, and the thunderbolt (વજ્ર) made from his bones destroyed the demon.

About the writer: ‘Snehrashmi’
‘Snehrashmi’ (Jhinabhai Desai, 1903–1991) was a poet, story-writer and educationist, and Gujarat’s first haiku-writer.
પૌરાણિક કથા: ત્યાગવીર દધીચિ – સરળ ભાષામાં
વૃત્રાસુર નામના રાક્ષસે દેવો અને ઋષિઓને ત્રાસ આપ્યો. કોઈ શસ્ત્ર એને મારી શકતું ન હતું.
દેવોને જાણવા મળ્યું – મહાન તપસ્વી ઋષિ દધીચિનાં હાડકાંમાંથી બનેલું શસ્ત્ર જ એનો નાશ કરી શકે.
દેવો દધીચિ પાસે ગયા. જગતના કલ્યાણ માટે દધીચિએ હસતાં હસતાં પોતાનો દેહ ત્યાગ્યો. તેમનાં હાડકાંમાંથી વજ્ર બન્યું અને વૃત્રાસુરનો નાશ થયો.
