Lesson 15 at a glance
Palu-ben, a vegetable seller in Ahmedabad, ‘spreads out’ her story like her vegetables on the pavement. She wakes at 3:30 a.m., cooks for the family, buys stock at Jamalpur market, sits by the road all day in heat, cold and rain, and gets home at nine at night – yet puts her children through school. She tells how municipal and police drives once seized their goods, and how SEWA (Self-Employed Women’s Association) organised the women, got them licences and fixed places in the market.

What the story teaches
Every hard-working person deserves respect – and together we are stronger.
