Lesson 11 at a glance
Dalpatram’s famous comic story-poem: a guru and his disciple reach ‘અંધેરી નગરી’, ruled by a foolish king, where everything sells at one price – ‘ટકે શેર ભાજી, ટકે શેર ખાજાં’. The greedy disciple stays for the cheap sweets, until the king’s absurd justice decides to hang him because his neck fits the noose! The wise guru rescues him with a clever trick.

About the writer: Dalpatram
Dalpatram (1820–1898), born in Wadhwan, was a pioneering Gujarati poet famous for wit and folk wisdom – ‘ભાઈ ભાઈ’ and ‘કવિ દલપતરામ’.
કથાકાવ્ય: અંધેરી નગરી – સરળ ભાષામાં
પૂરી એક અંધેરી ને ગંડુ રાજા, ટકે શેર ભાજી ટકે શેર ખાજાં. બધી ચીજ વેચાય ત્યાં ભાવ એકે – કશી સારી-નરસી ન વેચે વિવેકે.
ગુરુ-ચેલો ત્યાં આવ્યા. ગુરુ કહે, “અહીં રહેવું સારું નહિ.” પણ સસ્તાં ખાજાંના લોભે ચેલો રોકાયો અને ખાઈ ખાઈને જાડો થયો.
ગંડુ રાજાના અન્યાયી ન્યાયમાં ફાંસીનો ગાળિયો ચેલાના જાડા ગળામાં બંધ બેઠો! ગુરુએ ચતુરાઈ કરી – “આ ઘડીએ ફાંસીએ ચડનાર સીધો સ્વર્ગે જાય!” – રાજા પોતે ફાંસીએ ચડ્યો અને ચેલો બચ્યો.
