Lesson 12 at a glance
Poor schoolgirl Anandi longs to join the class picnic (ઉજાણી) but can’t pay the two-rupee fee. At the hospital where her mother works she finds a two-rupee note – torn between wish and conscience, she returns it to the doctor, who rewards her honesty with two rupees of her own.

Vinodini Neelkanth (1907–1987), writer and educationist, author of ‘દરિયાનાં મોતી’.
વાર્તા: બે રૂપિયા – સરળ ભાષામાં
આનંદી સૌથી મોટી દીકરી. બાપુ નથી; બા દવાખાનામાં કામ કરી ઘર ચલાવે. શાળામાં ઉજાણીની જાહેરાત થઈ – દરેકે બે રૂપિયા લાવવાના.
બે રૂપિયા ક્યાંથી લાવે? રાત્રે આનંદીએ ભગવાનને પ્રાર્થના કરી. બીજે દિવસે દવાખાનામાં ખુરશી નીચે બે રૂપિયાની નોટ મળી!
મન મૂંઝાયું – આ તો પારકા પૈસા! આનંદીએ ડૉક્ટરબહેનને બધી વાત કરી નોટ પાછી આપી. ડૉક્ટરબહેને પોતાના બે રૂપિયા આપ્યા – ‘તારી પ્રામાણિકતાનું ઇનામ!’
