How this book wants Gujarati to be taught

The book’s note to teachers and parents, in short:

Do

  • Teach Gujarati through Gujarati – create real situations, not translation
  • Use the conversation questions to get children talking; accept different answers
  • Pair children with Gujarati-speaking classmates as group leaders
  • Add more activities of your own – the book’s are examples

Don’t

  • Don’t translate into English or Hindi
  • Don’t over-explain word meanings
  • Don’t ask so many questions that the fun is lost
  • Don’t expect one “correct” answer to conversation questions

A prayer song: “we are your little children – take care of us, forgive our mistakes, give us good sense and the strength to wipe away others’ sorrow.”

Story: ચિત્ર જુઓ અને વાર્તા કહો

A picture story with no words: the animals of the forest are frightened of a lion, and a clever little hare leads him to a well. The lion sees his own reflection, roars at the “other lion” and jumps in. The child tells the story in their own words.

What the child learns

A revision unit – every letter and matra from Std 1 comes back in reading, tracing and word games, so the child starts Std 2 confident.

How to help at home

  1. Sing the prayer together each morning for a week.
  2. Look at the lion-and-hare pictures and let the child tell the story – help with words only if they get stuck.
  3. Read the three picture sentences aloud: “દિલીપ રમે છે.”, “ચકલી ઊડે છે.”

Story: મજાની સજા

Two brothers: Bharat happily eats home-cooked vegetables and bhakhri, while Bhaumik only wants fast food from the market. One day Bhaumik falls ill with a stomach ache. The vaidya gives him medicine and a gentle “punishment”: eat only home food and pulses for a while. Bhaumik recovers and learns his lesson.

What the child learns

Story: મનગમતી મોટર

Munno loves vehicles. At the fair his father lets him pick toys – a cycle, a scooter, an aeroplane, a train and a red car. At home he shows each toy to a family member and links it to a memory or a dream. His father says he may drive a real car one day – on one condition: drive very carefully. Munno promises to care for everyone on the road.

Story: ઉંદરભાઈની ટોપી

A mouse finds a piece of cloth and wants a cap. The tailor refuses – until the mouse threatens to call the soldiers. The same trick gets the cap embroidered and decorated with pearls. When the king’s soldiers tell him to move aside, the mouse says his cap is finer than the king’s! The king takes the cap; the mouse sings “the king is a beggar!” until the king returns it – and the mouse sings “the king is scared of me!”

Frequently asked questions

What is the Std 2 Gujarati Second Language textbook?

It is the GSEB textbook ગુજરાતી (દ્વિતીય ભાષા) ધોરણ 2, used in English-medium, Hindi-medium and other non-Gujarati-medium schools in Gujarat. It has 7 units across 94 pages.

How many units are in Std 2 Gujarati Second Language?

Seven: તારાં નાનાં બાળ, થઈએ કાકાકૌઆ!, છુકછુક ગાડી…, ખો ખો રમતું કબૂતર, મામાને ઘેર જાવા દે!, જાણો મારાં કામ and અમારે તે દેશ.

What new letters are taught in Std 2 Gujarati Second Language?

The remaining simple letters ભ, ય, ધ, ફ, ઓ, ઔ, ઢ, ઠ, શ, થ, ષ and the anusvar ં, plus the joined letters ક્ષ, શ્ર, ત્ર, જ્ઞ and ઋ. Units 5–7 then practise everyday joined and doubled letters such as સ્ત, ક્ક, પ્ર and ષ્ટ્ર.

How is Std 2 different from Std 1 Gujarati Second Language?

Std 1 focuses on listening and speaking with 31 letters. Std 2 completes the alphabet, adds joined letters and moves into real reading and writing – short sentences and paragraphs.

My child finished Std 1 in another board. Can they follow this book?

Yes. Unit 1 is a full revision of the Std 1 letters and matras, so it works as a bridge for children joining from another school.

Should I explain story meanings in English?

The book advises against translating. Use pictures, actions and simple Gujarati. This guide’s English summaries are for parents, so you can tell the story well.
