About the Std 3 Gujarati Second Language textbook

Gujarati is compulsory in every school in Gujarat from Std 1 to 8. For schools that are not Gujarati-medium, the Gujarat State School Textbook Board publishes The Std 3 book is called મયૂર (the peacock) and has 7 units across 84 pages.

Each unit opens with a song, has one story, and brings back a group of letters with tracing, word wheels, picture sentences and fun “letter detective” games. The book is designed so that children who are still new to Gujarati can build confidence quickly.

How this book wants Gujarati to be taught

The book’s own note “આટલું કરો / આટલું ન કરો”, in short:

Do

  • Chat informally with children before every lesson
  • Connect stories and poems to the child’s own experiences
  • Do every activity at least once, and repeat the ones children love
  • Let children write page numbers on both sides of the printed number
  • Say words from inside and outside the book again and again to grow vocabulary

Don’t

  • Don’t be a philosopher or guide – be the child’s friend
  • Don’t scare or scold; strict discipline stops learning
  • Don’t make them copy one letter or word again and again
  • Don’t stop children colouring the line drawings
  • Don’t call a child weak or clever in front of others

The songs

Ramesh Parekh’s nonsense song about a tiny butterfly – ‘નાનકડું એક પતંગિયું ભાઈ લેરી લૂડ’ – that flutters, dances and does funny things; plus a circus song about Jambu the joker.

Story:

Jhumru the joker walks into a school singing “અમ્મનચમ્મન ગુડ કે લડ્ડુ…”. In each verse he asks a child to pull his ear, then his nose, then his moustache – and each one comes off! Finally the teacher pulls his hair – it’s a wig, and he’s bald underneath. Jhumru drums on his head and everyone laughs till their tummies ache.

What the child learns

A warm-up unit: letters from Std 1–2 revised through circle-the-letter games, word wheels and picture sentences like “આ સાગર છે.”

How to help at home

  1. Sing the butterfly song with silly actions on ‘લેરી લૂડ’.
  2. Sing Jhumru’s chant “અમ્મનચમ્મન ગુડ કે લડ્ડુ…” and act each verse.
  3. Read the circus sentences aloud: “આ સરકસ છે.”
  4. Make words from a letter wheel – મ in the middle, letters around it.
  5. Play ‘letter detective’: count how often a letter appears in the story.

Questions to ask

Who pulled Jhumru’s nose?
What do you like to see at a circus?
Which game do you like to play?

The songs

A playful song by Ramesh Parekh, and later a rhyme about a sparrow couple – ‘

Story:

Hungry Jimmy the lion hides in a cave to catch whoever lives there. In the evening Dipu the jackal sees paw prints going in but none coming out. He calls sweetly, “ગુફા ઓ ગુફા! Why don’t you say ‘Good evening Dipu, welcome’ today?” The lion, thinking the cave must be scared, answers in his best voice, “Good evening dear Dipu, welcome!” – and Dipu quietly tiptoes away.

What the child learns

The letters પ, ડ, ત, ણ and the vowels ઇ, ઈ; animals and their homes; big and small words.

How to help at home

  1. Read the cave story with a big lion voice and a sly jackal voice.
  2. Match animals to their homes (the book has a picture page).
  3. Trace પ, ડ, ત, ણ, ઇ, ઈ and say one word for each.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Std 3 Gujarati Second Language textbook called?

It is called મયૂર (Mayur – peacock). It is the GSEB Gujarati (દ્વિતીય ભાષા) book for Std 3 in English-medium, Hindi-medium and other non-Gujarati-medium schools in Gujarat, with 7 units across 84 pages.

How many units are in Std 3 Gujarati Second Language Mayur?

How is Mayur different from Kalshor?

કલશોર is the first-language book for Gujarati-medium schools, with 10 longer units. મયૂર is the second-language book: simpler stories, and it revisits the alphabet unit by unit so that children who learn Gujarati as a second language can catch up.

Does Std 3 Mayur teach letters again?

Yes. Units 1–6 each bring back a group of letters – for example પ ડ ત ણ ઇ ઈ in Unit 2 and ઢ ઠ શ થ ં in Unit 6 – with tracing, word building and letter-detective games.

What does the book say parents and teachers should not do?

It asks adults to be the child’s friend, not a strict teacher; not to make children copy the same word again and again; and not to label a child as weak or clever in front of others.

Is ‘વાંદરાભાઈનું ઘર’ the same story as in Kalshor?

Yes – the monkey story in Unit 3 also appears in the Std 3 first-language book
