Lesson 12 at a glance
Gujarat is famous for its folk fairs. This lesson describes the unique ‘Gol-Gadheda’ fair at Jesawada in Dahod district, held a few days after Holi. A 20–25-foot pole is set up with a bundle of jaggery (ગોળ) at the top. Young women dance around it and beat any young man who tries to climb with sticks – yet a brave, nimble youth climbs, grabs the jaggery and throws it to the crowd. In old times this was a kind of swayamvar. The fair shows the pride tribal communities take in their culture.
