Lesson 2 at a glance
Simple-hearted Bako gets a thorn in his foot; a fairy heals him and teaches him two magic words – ‘ચોટદૂક!’ freezes anything in place, and ‘છૂટદૂક!’ sets it free. He saves a fish from a heron and a frog from a crow, freezes Bhopo’s spinning top in the air – and then captures a man-eating tiger for the forest department without hurting it. With his reward money he gets a bore-well dug to end the village’s water problem.

About the writer: લાભશંકર ઠાકર
Labhshankar Thakar (1935–2016) was an innovative Gujarati poet, playwright and story-writer, and a Sahitya Akademi Award winner; he also wrote playful stories for children.
વાર્તા: ચોટદૂક – સરળ ભાષામાં
કમળપુર ગામમાં બકો રહે – સાવ ભોળોભટાક. એક દિવસ નદીકાંઠે ફરતાં પગમાં કાંટો વાગ્યો. પીડા ઓછી કરવા તેણે પાણીમાં પગ ઝબોળ્યો. ત્યાં એક પરી પ્રગટ થઈ; કાંટો અદૃશ્ય થયો અને પીડા મટી ગઈ.
પરીએ બકાને વિદ્યા શીખવી – ‘ચોટદૂક’ બોલો તો જે હાલતું હોય તે જ્યાં છે ત્યાં ચોંટી જાય, અને ‘છૂટદૂક’ બોલો તો છૂટું થાય.
બકાએ વિદ્યા અજમાવી – માછલી પકડતા બગલાને ‘ચોટદૂક’ કહી અધ્ધર રોક્યો, દેડકાને પકડવા આવતા કાગડાને રોક્યો. ફળિયામાં ભોપાનો ભમરડો હવામાં જ સ્થિર થઈ ગયો!
એક દિવસ ગામમાં માણસખાઉ વાઘ આવ્યો. ખેડૂતો બંદૂક લઈ નીકળ્યા, પણ બકાએ ના પાડી. વાઘ કૂદ્યો ત્યાં ‘ચોટદૂક!’ – વાઘ હવામાં અધ્ધર! વનવિભાગે પાંજરું ગોઠવ્યું, ‘છૂટદૂક!’ – વાઘ સીધો પાંજરામાં.
અધિકારીઓએ બકાને સાહસ બદલ મોટી રકમ આપી સન્માન કર્યું. બકાએ એ રકમમાંથી ગામમાં બોર કરાવ્યો અને લોકોનું પાણીનું દુઃખ દૂર કર્યું.
