How this book wants Gujarati to be taught

The book’s own note “આટલું કરો / આટલું ન કરો”, in short:

Do

  • Chat informally with children before every lesson
  • Connect stories and poems to the child’s own experiences
  • Do every activity at least once, and repeat the ones children love
  • Let children write page numbers on both sides of the printed number
  • Say words from inside and outside the book again and again to grow vocabulary

Don’t

  • Don’t be a philosopher or guide – be the child’s friend
  • Don’t scare or scold; strict discipline stops learning
  • Don’t make them copy one letter or word again and again
  • Don’t stop children colouring the line drawings
  • Don’t call a child weak or clever in front of others

Story: પતરંગાનો બીજો પ્રવાસ

After the Saputara trip, everyone in Patranga Park wants to travel – the moon, the monkeys, the paper boat, the bear. Even the rasgullas in the fridge sing ‘અમે રસગુલ્લાં રાજા!’ and beg to go along. When Gulab and Kusum set off for Delhi, the rasgullas finally get their trip. Characters from the Std 5 book કુક્કુટ return.

Story: પંખીની પહેલી મહાસભા

The birds hold their first great assembly. The crow proposes Garuda as president, the parrot proposes the ostrich as vice-president, the pigeon asks for a guard against hunters, and the crows complain about the cuckoo who leaves her eggs in their nests.
